Gordon H. Mansfield as Acting VA Secretary
Paralyzed Veterans of America Applauds the Appointment of Gordon H. Mansfield as Acting VA Secretary
Washington, DC—Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) is pleased that Gordon H. Mansfield has been appointed acting secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Mansfield most recently served as VA’s deputy secretary, and assumed his current position when former VA Secretary Jim Nicholson resigned.
“We at Paralyzed Veterans are very proud of Gordon’s elevation to acting secretary,” said Randy L. Pleva, Sr., Paralyzed Veterans’ national president. “We have worked with him during his distinguished tenure at the VA, and he has proven himself as a ‘veteran’s veteran.’ His leadership on both veterans’ and disabilities issues have earned the respect of those communities.”
Mansfield was appointed executive director of Paralyzed Veterans in 1993. Prior to that, he served as assistant secretary for the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where his duties included the enforcement of the Fair Housing Law. In the 1980s, he spent eight years at Paralyzed Veterans in a variety of positions, including serving as the organization’s first associate executive director of government relations. Before joining Paralyzed Veterans, Mansfield practiced law in Ocala, FL, focusing on poverty-related litigation.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University in 1964, Mansfield enlisted in the U.S. Army. Four years later, on his second tour of duty, Mansfield was serving as a company commander with the 101st Airborne Division when he sustained a spinal cord injury. His combat decorations include the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Founded in 1946, Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans), is the only congressionally chartered veterans service organization dedicated solely for the benefit and representation of veterans with spinal cord injury or disease. Paralyzed Veterans is a dynamic, broad-based organization with more than 19,000 members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
