James Rutledge serves as Chair of the Chapter’s Sports & Recreation Committee and as such is the sports and recreation resource person for the Wisconsin Chapter. He oversees training and participation in a variety of activities such as track and field, swimming, archery, air rifles, table tennis, bowling, wheelchair (w/c) basketball, w/c softball, w/c tennis, quad rugby, sailing, snow skiing, billiards, trap shooting, road racing, hand cycling, and weight lifting.

Since 2000 we have sponsored wheelchair basketball and softball and also provided financial support for the Milwaukee Iron, the local Quad Rugby team that competes on a national level. WPVA also fields an accomplished team for PVA’s National Trap Circuit and several members participate in the PVA’s national BASS fishing tour.

In early June the chapter provides financial support to send over 100 WPVA members to “Disabled Veterans Fish Outing in Port Washington hosted by American Legion, VFW and DAV posts in that city. After a full day of fishing the participants are treated to a large Fish Boil.

Chapter representatives work closely with Joyce Casey, the Recreation Therapist, to provide ongoing sports and recreation activities for the patients of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the Zablocki Veterans Medical Center. For example, our chapter provides the Internet connections on the SCI so that the patients can enjoy this pursuit. Each year our staff and members work with Joyce to organize and train a team of WPVA members for the National Veteran Wheelchair Games.

In late August, our chapter hosts a large Pig Roast Tailgate Party at Miller Park home of the Milwaukee Brewers for all of our Regular and Associate members as well as any business/corporate sponsors who might want to attend this party and a Brewer Game.

WPVA strives to provide a variety of recreation and sports activities so that all of our members can find an activity or sport in which to participate and to whole-heartedly enjoy.

Any member interested in a particular sport of recreational activity can obtain information and assistance from Joyce (414-384-2000, ext. 41256) or Sara (414-384-2000, ext. 41245) or Jim (414-328-8910)
