James Rutledge and Larry Ramirez serve as Chairs of the Chapter’s Sports & Recreation Committee and as such are the sports and recreation resource people for the Wisconsin Chapter. They oversee training and participation in a variety of activities such as track and field, swimming, archery, air rifles, table tennis, bowling, wheelchair (w/c) basketball, w/c softball, w/c tennis, quad rugby, sailing, snow skiing, billiards, trap shooting, road racing, hand cycling, and weight lifting.

Since 2000 we have sponsored wheelchair basketball and softball and also provided financial support for the Milwaukee Iron, the local Quad Rugby team that competes on a national level. WPVA also fields an accomplished team for PVA’s National Trap Circuit and several members participate in the PVA’s national BASS fishing tour.

In early June the chapter provides financial support to send over 100 WPVA members to “Disabled Veterans Fish Outing in Port Washington hosted by American Legion, VFW and DAV posts in that city. After a full day of fishing the participants are treated to a large Fish Boil.

Chapter representatives work closely with the Joyce Casey, the Recreation Therapist, to provide ongoing sports and recreation activities for the patients of the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the Zablocki Veterans Medical Center. For example, our chapter provides the Internet connections on the SCI so that the patients can enjoy this pursuit. Each year our staff and members work with Joyce to organize and train a team of WPVA members for the National Veteran Wheelchair Games.

In late August, our chapter hosts a large Pig Roast Tailgate Party at Miller Park home of the Milwaukee Brewers for all of our Regular and Associate members as well as any business/corporate sponsors who might want to attend this party and a Brewer Game.

WPVA strives to provide a variety of recreation and sports activities so that all of our members can find an activity or sport in which to participate and to whole-heartedly enjoy.

Any member interested in a particular sport of recreational activity can obtain information and assistance from Joyce (414-384-2000, ext. 41256) or Jim and Larry (414-328-8910)

The National PVA Trapshoot Circuit was created to give individuals with disabilities a chance to participate in the recreational and competitive sport of trapshooting. One of the goals of the Circuit is to enable shooters with disabilities and able-bodied shooters to compete as equals. (This goal is reflected in the make up of WPVA’s Trap team that is composed of both shooters with and without disabilities who have competed and won many awards on the circuit.

The Amateur Trapshooting Association’s (ATA’s) Book of Rules draws no distinction between able-bodied shooters and shooters with disabilities, which allows both to compete as equals. Each of our Trap Team members chooses the five of eleven events they want to participate in so that they can qualify for the Circuit Finale in Boise, Idaho.

Contact: If you are interested in shooting on the WPVA Trap Team please contact Phillip Rosenberg at 414-384-2000, ext 46934 or Jim Rutledge/Larry Ramirez at 414-328-8910.
